Easy Content Management for Non-Technical People
by Ben Wilson on August 25th, 2015
There is no longer any argument, having a website is a necessity for businesses.
Your website is your gateway to the online universe as it provides valuable information about your company and your services, and it serves as your connection to potential customers.
Where to start?
Although there are a myriad of other applications for a business website the simple objective of providing good, current content that is relevant to your target audience
still probably sits at number 1 on the wish list. And when Google uses constantly changing content as a key determinant of your websites ranking it moves from a wish to a necessity.
Why then have businesses put up with website systems that are designed for website developers or systems that limit the type of content we can create ourselves as business people / website owners for so long? The reason is that this is how the website industry evolved. It grew from a technical base where the people with technical skills wanted to ensure that you remained reliant on them for any updates or changes. To put your website to optimum use it must be constantly changing in order to remain current and hence needs to be properly managed and maintained.
Managing a website.
Being able to manage your own website offers huge advantages to the business owner including reduced costs, better Google ranking and it will support and/or enhance your brand and image. The good news is that you no longer need to be a programmer in order to have full control of your website and you should be wary of systems that look “tech heavy” or website developers who won’t show you the system they intend to use.
So when trying to work out which is the right system for you, the following is a list of the typical things that you should consider:
- Create a content calendar. Have a plan for the content you and your team need to create and upload to your website – 6 months at a time is great.
- Create places for new web pages. Make sure you have a number of places that allow you to easily upload various types of content and a variety of related information (Latest News, Blog, Videos and Project Galleries etc.)
- Create and edit content. Posting informative, relevant, and engaging content is an effective way to attract and retain website visitors and improve your website ranking. With the right system you can easily create content and make necessary changes to existing content.
- Post images and videos. Content does not only come in text form. You may also use photos, videos, and graphics to spice things up.
Not everyone is computer savvy.
Unfortunately, not all website owners are tech savvy. The typical lack of technical skills has for many years hindered business owners in their desire to fully optimise their websites potential. This reliance on technical skills puts the average business owner at a disadvantage that usually compromises their online strategy and costs more than they want to spend.
